Use Case 2 - Rail

Rail – Temperature Impact Monitoring for Rail Infrastructure

The second use case of the SPATRA project innovates within the rail sector by monitoring and forecasting temperature impacts on rail track operation and safety. Utilizing data from the Copernicus satellite program, SPATRA develops predictive analytics for rail temperature fluctuations and identifies risks of track deformation or buckling due to extreme temperatures.

Strategies:

Rail Temperature Surveillance: Continuous monitoring of rail track temperatures and surrounding environmental conditions using Earth observation data.

Proactive Infrastructure Maintenance: Leveraging machine learning algorithms to forecast temperature changes and evaluate buckling risks, enabling timely maintenance and operational adjustments.

Outcomes:

Improved rail safety with advanced detection of infrastructure vulnerabilities.

Reduced incidences of service interruption through preemptive maintenance strategies and operational planning.

Maintained high reliability and performance standards in rail services, ensuring secure and efficient passenger and freight movement.

Implications:

This use case marks a significant step forward in rail transport safety and infrastructure management. Through the strategic application of satellite data for early warning systems, SPATRA demonstrates its commitment to enhancing rail network integrity and operational excellence across Europe.
