First Press Release – SPATRA Project Embarks on Transforming European Transport with Advanced Space Technologies

March 2024 – The SPATRA project, supported by the European Union Agency for the Space Programm (EUSPA) under the HORIZON-EUSPA-2022-SPACE-02-56 initiative, for designing space-based downstream applications with international partners, is proud to announce its start. This initiative is a collaboration among key organizations such as SPATRA partners OHB Digital Services, the University of Niš, Zentrix Lab OU, Nelt, and Twist Robotics Ukraine.

SPATRA is leading the effort to incorporate space-based technologies into European road and rail transport systems, aiming to address and improve current challenges in traffic management and rail safety.

Practical Applications for Enhanced Mobility

Gathered in Prague, Czech Republic, the consortium’s kick-off meeting set the stage for this innovative project, aiming to leverage Earth Observation (EO), EGNSS, and Copernicus data focusing on two main objectives: the improvement of road traffic management and the enhancement of rail infrastructure safety through innovative infrastructure monitoring and management. The project targets a reduction in traffic congestion, an increase in transport safety, and a decrease in carbon emissions, contributing to the goals of sustainable mobility.

Collaborative Efforts for a Sustainable Future
With the collaborative strength of international partners and the backing of the EU’s space program, SPATRA is committed to delivering close to market-ready solutions that will not only benefit the European logistic and railway sectors but also have a global impact.

Tailored Solutions for Real-World Challenges

The project has outlined specific use cases to demonstrate SPATRA’s approach to overcoming challenges within the transport sector:

  • Efficient Road Traffic Management: SPATRA is developing satellite-based tools to analyze real-time traffic data, aiming to enhance traffic flow management. This is particularly crucial at border crossings where delays are common, potentially leading to reduced waiting times and more efficient logistics.
  • Rail Safety Enhancements: The project is employing satellite data to anticipate and mitigate risks associated with rail infrastructure, such as track buckling due to extreme temperatures. This focus on improvement of rail safety aims to provide more reliable rail services across Europe.

Commitment to Sustainable and Safe Transport

SPATRA is committed to making transport systems more efficient, safe, and environmentally friendly. By leveraging space technologies, the project supports the European Green Deal’s objectives, showcasing the impactful role of these technologies in transforming transport.
