SPATRA Use Case: Enhancing Road Infrastructure with Advanced Technologies

Efficient and sustainable road infrastructure is a cornerstone of modern transportation systems. Under the SPATRA project, the “Road” use case focuses on integrating innovative technologies to address current challenges in road maintenance, safety, and environmental impact. This effort aims to create more resilient and adaptive road networks that meet the demands of both urban and rural areas.

Objectives of the Road Use Case

The “Road” use case is designed to explore practical applications of emerging technologies in the context of road infrastructure. By leveraging advanced tools and data-driven approaches, this use case addresses several key areas:

  • Monitoring of border crossing: Developing systems that allow continuous monitoring of road conditions to ensure estimation of the truck arrival time at the destination.
  • Monitoring of parking occupancy: allowing detection of available parking lots near the border to allow timely planning of breaks for the drivers.

The use case integrates several technological solutions, including:

  • Vehicle trackers: embedded in trucks to collect data on traffic patterns and current position of the vehicle
  • Satellite data: infrastructure mapping and historical truck data, based on developed algorithms and machine learning models that predict congestions and estimates more accurate ETA.
  • Cameras: official live video streams are analysed to measure the throughput and movement of vehicles
  • Drones: effective real-time monitoring of the in-field situation at parking lots near the border and the length of the truck queue from the border
  • Transport management system: Platforms to ensure effective planning of transport and monitoring of vehicles and their routes.

Progress and Next Steps

The “Road” use case is currently in the development and testing phase. Initial results from pilot projects demonstrate the potential for significant improvements in monitoring processes. By addressing the challenges of modern road infrastructure with advanced technologies, the SPATRA project aims to crate more sustainable and efficient transportation systems.
